Triangle nonprofits are encouraged to apply for a Duke Community Care Fund grant that supports projects that meet significant local needs.
The Duke Office of Durham & Regional Affairs is accepting Community Care Fund applications July 5 through August 2. The fund, which began in 2009, awards annual, competitive grants to organizations in Durham, Wake and Orange counties and is completely funded by Duke employee donations to the annual Duke Doing Good in the Neighborhood campaign.
“Community Care Fund grants help local nonprofits expand their innovative programs and kick-start new projects,” said Channa Pickett, head of the Community Care Fund and senior program coordinator in the Duke Office of Durham & Regional Affairs. “This annual grant-making program is entirely funded by the generosity of Duke staff and faculty.”
Nonprofits that are interested in funding must submit a grant application, which is then examined by a review team of Duke employees. Grants will be awarded for project proposals aligned with Community Care Fund themes that are based on community priorities set by Durham, Wake and Orange County governments:
Grants will range from $1,000 to $5,000 and will be awarded in October. To learn more about the themes and eligibility criteria as well as submit an application through the Community Care Fund online grant portal July 5 through August 2, visit the Doing Good in the Neighborhood website.
In 2016, the Duke Office of Durham & Regional Affairs received 103 applications and ultimately awarded a total of $159,183 to 47 organizations. The number of employee donations that the Community Care Fund giving category receives every year as part of Doing Good in the Neighborhood directly impacts the number of organizations that receive funding.
“Last year, our Duke office witnessed a significant increase in the number of Community Care Fund grant applications we received,” Pickett said. “The intensifying need to financially support nonprofits is very real in our community, and that’s why employee donations to Doing Good in the Neighborhood continue to be so important.”
Employees can make a donation to the Community Care Fund year-round. Staff and faculty can choose to make an ongoing contribution or a one-time gift through payroll deduction or through the Duke giving website. Learn more at doinggood.duke.edu/how-to-donate.
