"Staying engaged is the best way to age." That's Duke Professor Emeritus George Maddox's motto. The past president of Duke University Retiree Outreach regularly volunteers in the library at Lakewood Elementary School, and his wife Evelyn tutors there. Their own children attended the school years ago. "Not only is it good for me," George says, "but I enjoy the interaction with students, teachers and my colleagues."

DURO helps retired Duke employees serve their community, with a focus on helping Lakewood Elementary. We also welcome you to look over the partnership's neighborhood priorities and suggest other ways you'd like to help. Here are a few ready-made opportunities:
