Partner Neighborhoods: Watts-Hillandale

The 1910 construction of Watts Hospital at Broad Street and West Club Boulevard prompted the development of land to the west and north. The area became one of Durham's "streetcar suburbs," with trolley service to downtown.

The development of Hillandale Country Club, Durham's first 18-hole golf course, in 1923 further boosted the area, as club members built the impressive houses that stand today along West Club Boulevard, Englewood Avenue and neighboring streets.

The old hospital building is now home to the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, and the neighborhood is called Watts Hospital/Hillandale, or Watts-Hillandale, after its geographic bookends. Since the mid-1960s, Watts-Hillandale has benefited from nearby commercial development along Ninth Street and the growth of the School of Science and Math.

The neighborhood is served by nearby E.K. Powe Elementary, a Neighborhood Partnership school.
