Campus Briefs: Duke alumnus gives $200K gift

From Staff Reports

A Duke University alumnus has given $200,000 to help endow the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, the largest gift yet from a non-trustee.

Kevin Kenny Jr. is chairman of the Neighborhood Partnership's national advisory board and was a leader in reaching out to the community during his time at Duke, as well as a wonderful advocate since, according to Duke President Richard Brodhead.

The Partnership was started in 1996 to connect the university with local nonprofits and residents in 12 neighborhoods close to campus to improve the quality of life and boost student achievement.

Three Duke trustees -- John Mack, Morris Williams and Robert Steel -- have each contributed $500,000 to the partnership, for which more than $12 million has been raised overall. The partnership concentrates its efforts and investment in four areas: education enrichment and youth development; neighborhood stabilization; strengthening community organizations; and engaging Duke students and staff in community service.
