Fifty-eight champion spellers representing schools across Durham and Orange counties filled the stage of Baldwin Auditorium Saturday for the sixth annual Duke Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Office of Durham and Regional Affairs.
Parents and well-wishers watched from the filled auditorium, silently pulling for the spellers as, one by one, they tackled difficult words at the microphone. Slowly the stage emptied as champions misspelled and went to join their families in the audience.
Two-and-a-half hours and 12 rounds after the bee began, the final spellers onstage were 2012 regional champion Ned Swansey and 2014 champion Bettie Closs. Closs, a sixth-grader from Lucas Middle School in Durham, won the 2015 title with the word “corrade.”
Congratulations to all our regional competitors, and thanks to the volunteers and schools who make the bee possible!
