Duke alumnus discusses homelessness in America

Brian Goldstone, a Duke University alumnus, recently visited Durham to discuss his book, There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America, at a special event co-hosted by the Duke Center for Community Engagement, the Duke Hart Leadership Program, and nonprofit Housing for Hope. The event featured a compelling conversation about the rise of the “working homeless” in cities across the U.S., highlighting the stories of five Atlanta families grappling with housing instability despite holding full-time jobs. Following the discussion, attendees had the opportunity to purchase signed copies of the book.

Goldstone, a journalist with a Ph.D. in anthropology from Duke, has contributed to publications like Harper’s Magazine and The New Republic. His book sheds light on the human cost of gentrification and the housing crisis, emphasizing that the issue extends beyond visible homelessness to include those who are employed yet still unable to secure stable housing.
