At the Diaper Bank of North Carolina, 13 Duke Fuqua School of Business employees carried teetering stacks of new diapers and sorted the diapers into wrapped bundles.
Twice a year, employees at the business school participate in a Fuqua Week of Service to give back to community organizations like the Diaper Bank. Last week, 89 employees volunteered at the Diaper Bank, Urban Ministries, Durham Rescue Mission, Meals on Wheels, Book Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, Durham Partnership for Children and the Ronald McDonald House.
The Diaper Bank, a Durham-based nonprofit, provides diapers and other personal hygiene products to families living in poverty to promote and protect the dignity, health and quality of life of North Carolina residents. The diapers that Duke employees packed on May 17 will be delivered to families in need.
During their service day, Fuqua employees met at the Diaper Bank warehouse in Durham where they split into teams to tackle the important task of transforming tall piles of diapers lining the warehouse walls into neat, snug packages containing 25 diapers apiece. Michelle Old, executive director of the Diaper Bank of North Carolina, shared that without the help of volunteers, it would not be possible to distribute the 211,000 diapers that the Diaper Bank provides to Triangle residents each month.
Fuqua employees have been volunteering with the Diaper Bank since 2015, when Fuqua Week of Service began.
“It feels good to do good,” said Colin Tjalma, Fuqua’s director of facilities, as she wrapped diapers that will soon be in the hands of a mother who needs them. Participating in this service activity is also “a great way to connect with other people that you don’t see very often,” she said.
Volunteering at organizations like this one is just one way that Duke employees give back to the community. Through Duke’s annual employee giving campaign, Doing Good in the Neighborhood, employees can connect with community service opportunities or receive volunteering ideas year-round by emailing campaign staff at email@example.com.
Duke employees can also make a financial contribution year-round to the Doing Good in the Neighborhood campaign, which supports local nonprofits, neighborhoods and schools in Durham and the region. Learn more at doinggood.duke.edu.
