Bettie Closs, the Little River Elementary School fifth-grader who won the Duke Regional Spelling Bee in March, spent the last week in Washington, D.C. competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Duke’s Office of Durham and Regional Affairs, sponsor of the regional bee, provided the all-expenses-paid trip for Bettie and her family.
Before Bettie left for Washington, Little River gave her a spectacular surprise send-off: The entire school lined the hallways, chanting Bettie’s name, holding signs and giving hugs and high-fives as she walked through them to the principal’s office.
At the national bee, Bettie competed against hundreds of her peers from across the country. She said the part she liked best was making friends with her fellow champion spellers.
Congratulations to Bettie for making it so far — we are proud of you! The next Duke Regional Spelling Bee, which will determine who attends the national bee in 2015, will be held in March of next year.
