The 13th annual Samuel DuBois Cook Society dinner and awards ceremony celebrated nine members of the Duke and Durham communities for their contributions in the field of mentoring. Two winners — The Girls’ Club and Alethea Duncan — have worked closely with programs of the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. Members of The Girls’ Club serve as role models for local middle-school girls, and Duncan mentors middle-schoolers in the Building Opportunities and Overtures in Science and Technology program (BOOST).
The “Sammie” awards are named for Duke professor and human rights activist Samuel DuBois Cook.
