Every year, Duke first-year students learn about Durham through themed excursions — historic, recreational, culinary and more — during an outing known as Duke, Durham and Beyond.
The event facilitates genuine engagement between faculty members and students in comfortable, enjoyable settings in and around Durham. Each outing gives sponsoring faculty an opportunity to be an ambassador for one of their favorite aspects of the community, from theatre performances to bike trails to farmer’s markets, and much more.
The Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership offers an annual service outing, and this Saturday’s excursion took students to the beautiful school garden cultivated by Duke University Retiree Outreach at partner school Lakewood Elementary. Thanks to the students who signed on, and to Neil Hoefs for leading the project!
