Duke Regional Spelling Bee 2021

Congratulations, Cana Gerald-Hasan!

This year, students across the Triangle competed in the Duke Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 27th, 2021. In a virtual year, the champion was decided through the Scripps Spelling Bee’s new Online Testing Platform that allowed for students to complete the regional bee online.

Students studied from the Scripps Spelling Bee Words of The Champions study list which contains a total of 4,000 words! After a day of spelling, Cana Gerald-Hasan of A. L. Stanback Middle School was declared our Duke Regional Spelling Bee champion and is moving on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Preliminaries on June 12th are just a month away! Spellers across the country will compete virtually in the first three rounds of the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Our team member, Chi Vo, will be a proctor for the preliminaries; proctors this year ensure the integrity of the national finals during the virtual event. The top 10-12 spellers will travel to the in-person Finals on July 8th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort!

The Bee’s Purpose:

Our purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
