The Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park opened in 2003 in the historic Lyon Park Elementary School building. It was a moment for celebration, following years of hard work and fundraising by neighborhood residents and their city and Duke partners. But even then something was missing — a kitchen.
If the community center had a kitchen, it would mean easily accessible hot meals for local youth and seniors; a place of refuge for neighbors in case of an emergency; and a new way for neighbors to connect regularly at the facility.
After years of regular meetings and some serious outreach and fundraising, that vision is about to become a reality for the Lyon Park neighborhood. Construction has started, with support from the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, and the kitchen will be ready for use this winter.
Congratulations to all those who’ve worked so hard to make it happen! Here are a few photos from the early stages of renovation.
