NCCU-Duke Internship Named for Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton

The NCCU- Duke summer internship, which began 16 years ago, will be named after one of its founders, Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton. Dr. McKissick-Melton is beloved by an entire generation of NCCU students. She co-founded the NCCU-Duke Communication Internship Program and guided at least 250 students through a communications ‘boot camp’ hiring process resulting in the hire of 170 NCCU student interns during the summer months at various Duke departments.

Dr. McKissick-Melton, who retired in 2022, was an award-winning professor who led the creation of the Mass Communications Department at NCCU and was its first chair. She also spearheaded the creation of a digital media lab in the NCCU communications building that students call “The Mac Lab.”
