When Durham’s Partnership for Children set out to create a transition program to help the families of rising kindergarten students prepare for school, they worked with the Office of Durham and Regional Affairs to select their pilot schools and identify their contacts.
Jenny Carolina, Director of Education Initiatives in the office, helped connect DPfC to the talented teachers and administrators who have run successful Stepping Stones kindergarten readiness programs at four elementary schools: E.K. Powe, Forest View, Lakewood and Y.E. Smith. These schools are now the pilot sites for this promising initiative.
The school-based events so far have been a hit with families, who have left with more information about their children’s schools and with the tools they need to register for kindergarten and help their children develop some of the reading and social skills that will come in handy on Day One.
The program has been based on a successful model out of Pittsburgh. Visit the Ready Eddy site to learn more and to look for upcoming events, which will continue throughout the summer.
