
Dr. Liz DeMattia
Director, Community Science Initiative, Duke Marine Lab
Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) DeMattia (BA, MEM, PhD) is an ecologist and the director of the Community Science Initiative at the Duke University Marine Lab. Her current work focuses on community engagement related to conservation, with a specific emphasis on environmental education and working with youth to create positive environmental change. She has over 30 years of experience developing local environmental programs with community partners, including citizen science programs that connect youth to science via action and agency. Her recent work has been merging personal, ecological, and community resilience principles into programming for schools, kids, and their communities. This resilience work weaves together past work on ecological conservation, environmental education, intergenerational learning, community engagement, and youth empowerment.
