Civic Engagement
Through a joint partnership with DHIC and partners, Self-Help, the City of Durham and AJ Fletcher Foundation, Duke's 2.5M contribution helped create 82 new affordable units.
With a bright smile and an infectious laugh, Joann Carpenter radiates positive energy. At her home dedication ceremony, Habitat for Humanity staff commented on her spirit as Carpenter took the keys and moved in with her family as a new homeowner.
As a CAC college adviser at Lakewood High School in Sampson County, Desmond Gatling helps rural students think about college plans in ways they might not otherwise think possible.
Even amidst a global pandemic, the DPS Foundation has been able to help Durham children receive access to high-quality education.
Since COVID-19 forced North Carolina high schools to close in March, the 16 full-time members of the Duke College Advising Corps (Duke CAC) have, along with other Americans, faced the twin challenges of adapting to novel working conditions while also stepping up to meet urgent needs in their communities.
In partnership with the City of Durham, Self Help, SunTrust/Truist, NC Community Development Initiative, Duke contributed $3M to enable small and nonprofit developers to build affordable housing units in Durham.
