This year’s Doing Good – Health Fund grant application cycle will be open October 28 – November 25, 2024. The competitive grants are funded by Duke employee donations to the Doing Good employee giving campaign.
The Duke University Doing Good – Health Fund invites applications from Triangle non-profit organizations facilitating projects that help address food security and nutrition, as well as the environment and sustainability, and support healthy communities (see below for additional expansion on these themes). Below is a summary of grant information. Apply for the grant here.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be a registered 501c3 organization or have a 501c3 as a fiscal sponsor.
- Project scope, key partners, and benefits must be located in Durham, Orange, or Wake counties.

Health Fund Grant Themes
Proposed interventions and initiatives must embrace an equity approach to community engagement, and align with at least one of the following funding themes:
- Environment & Sustainability – Organizing programs that strengthen community awareness, advocacy, or stewardship for environmental issues and sustainable “green” behaviors.
- Food Access & Education — Helping Triangle residents access affordable and nutritious food and creating a culture of healthy eating.
- Healthy Communities — Supporting health and wellness initiatives that positively promote the physical and mental well-being of individuals and their communities. Projects must address one of the following issues: chronic illnesses, mental health, obesity, sexual & reproductive health (maternal health, sexually transmitted infections, teen pregnancy), substance abuse.
Grant Amount
Grants awarded will range from $1,000 to $5,000.
Please keep in mind that our office will be facilitating multiple funds and will only be able to distribute one grant per organization or school.
Application Guidelines
The following questions are included in the application to provide context and support for your request:
- Proposal Description: Purpose and goals of this project
- Project Description and Fit: How your project goals and activities are aligned with the Doing Good – Health Funding themes?
- Project Implementation & Evaluation: How will you define your success? What outcomes do you expect to see? What evaluation methods and specific metrics will you use to measure the success of your project?
- Population Served: Number of individuals or families served or other metrics of impact. Who will benefit from this proposal? How does this project promote equity in the community it serves?
- Best Practices & Sustainability: How does your proposal build off of previous program success or evidence-based strategies used in the project? If necessary, how will you sustain your project throughout this funding cycle and beyond?
- Budget: Estimated break-down of how funds will be used
Timeline
Grant applications will be reviewed by the Doing Good – Health Fund Review Committee. The Review Committee will be comprised of Duke employees who represent a variety of departments from across the university and health system. Please see below for more information about our timeline.
- 10/28/24: Application opens
- 11/25/24: Deadline for application submission
- 12/6-12/20/24: Review of applications
- 1/6/25 – 1/20/25: Grantees notified with agreements
- 9/1/25: Deadline for reporting and evaluation submission
How to Apply
Step 1: To start an application, go to our online application portal. Check first to see if your organization has an account. If you do not have one or are new to the site, please create an account. Note the video tutorials that are located on the login page.
Step 2: Once you have created an account or you have logged in, click on the “Apply” menu at the top of the page. Navigate to the “Doing Good – Health” fund section.
Step 3: Applications cannot be edited after submission. Please carefully review the application before submitting it. Submit completed applications and supporting materials by Nov. 25, 2024.
