Duke is deeply concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on our neighbors and is providing support through The Duke-Durham Fund. The fund, with an initial commitment of $5 million from Duke, will provide assistance to area non-profits, small businesses, and community-based organizations.
If you are a community member or business that would like to support the Durham community please make monetary gifts directly to the Duke-Durham Fund. Funds go directly to the community in the form of grants to non-profits and small businesses. If you are a Duke University or Duke University Health System employee and would like to support organizations affected by COVID-19, please consider making a monetary gift to the employee giving campaign.
The Duke-Durham Fund – A mission of purposeful partnerships
As Duke works to fulfill its academic and health care missions at a critical time for our campus and broader communities, we remain committed to supporting our neighbors through purposeful partnerships.
In response to COVID-19, Duke pledged to expand the Duke-Durham Fund to provide funding and technical assistance to non-profits, small businesses and community-based organizations affected by the pandemic. Most of the grant recipients are long-standing partners with Duke in our community.
The primary purpose of the Duke-Durham Fund was to address the immediate basic needs of the Durham community in several phases.
EMERGENCY RELIEF FOR THE COMMUNITY
Phase I – Emergency Relief for the Community – provides small grants up to $5,000 to community-based organizations for projects that address immediate, basic needs of food, shelter, and childcare for individuals and families affected by COVID-19. Round 1 is now closed. Rounds 2 and 3 opened on May 27 and close on June 9 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
Emergency Relief for the Community grant awards range from $500 to $5,000 per round for community-based organizations, depending on the number of clients served and indicated outcomes of the projects. The hope is to reach as many individuals and families in emergency need in our Durham community as we are able.
Grants to community-based organizations will be considered based on the following criteria:
-Address immediate, basic needs defined as food, shelter, and childcare for individuals and families affected by COVID-19.
-Track record of serving individuals and families in Durham, especially most vulnerable population.
-The ability to support individuals and families with immediate basic needs in the midst of COVID-19 impact and reach.
-Evidence of 501c3 status.
Grants will be reviewed simultaneously for Rounds 2 and 3. Organizations may apply for each round of funding even if they have already received funds as long as funds are still available. The goal is to quickly fund COVID-19 support activities.
Application Period for Rounds 2 and 3:
Rounds 2 and 3 open on May 27 – and close on June 9 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
The Review Timeline:
The review team will meet and make recommendations by the end of June.
Award letter notifications will begin by the end of June.
The Check Disbursement process begins immediately thereafter notification and commences upon grantees returning signed contracts.
About Emergency Relief for the Community Grants
Duke received 144 applications in round 1 and 82 organizations have been funded for a total of more than $350,000. Total funding available is $1.05 million – one million was committed by Duke and more than $55,000 was raised by the Duke and Durham community.
CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT NONPROFITS
The Corporate Partnership for Durham – COVID-19 Recovery Fund funded 31 nonprofit organizations providing food, housing, childcare and education for the Durham community through the corporate partnership. Grant applications opened April 23 and closed April 30. Award notifications began on May 27.
Requests for funding were nearly double that of available resources. All funds were awarded by the Corporate Partnership in one round due to the overwhelming requests for support.
About The Corporate Partnership for Durham – COVID-19 Recovery Fund
Part of the Duke-Durham Fund, The Corporate Partnership brought together corporations, Duke University, local government and community leaders to identify and respond to our community’s most vulnerable Durham residents as a result of the pandemic by investing in non-profits responding to immediate COVID-19 Recovery needs. The Fund provided grants up to 75,000 for non-profits that address large-scale, community-wide services related to food security, emergency housing assistance, education, support for healthcare workers, and other emergent issues stemming from COVID-19.
The Fund is hosted and administered by Duke University, which committed $1 million in seed funding. Nearly $400,000 was donated by corporate partners. Grant decisions were made by funders and community representatives.

EMERGENCY RELIEF FOR CARTERET COUNTY
The Emergency Relief Fund for Community Organizations in Carteret County may provide grants of up to $5,000 to eligible community organizations for selected projects that address immediate basic needs of food, shelter, and childcare for residents of Carteret County affected by COVID-19. PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT BUSINESS
The Partnership to Support Business will provide support to small businesses in Durham with funding and technical assistance. Duke pledged $1 million to match structured funds. This fund is in progress.
